It¡¯s hard to think of Paris without conjuring up images of the Eiffel Tower. ( A ) The design of the 324-meter-tall, wrought iron structure is usually attributed to Gustave Eiffel. ( B ) Yet, two employees of his Eiffel Company, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, were the ones who actually engineered it.( C ) When their entry won, and the assembly of the tower began, hundreds of artists, architects, and writers petitioned to stop it, likening the design to a ¡°gigantic black smokestack¡± that would taint the city skyline. ( D ) Construction proceeded as planned, however, and the monument is now the most iconic and famous symbol of France.

Most people agree that children are society¡¯s most valuable assets and should thus be nurtured and protected from harm. This was the sound reasoning behind Bolivian president Evo Morales¡¯ bill, which banned children between the ages of five and fourteen from working. Not only that, the new law guaranteed that youths would receive adequate education and healthcare. But one group actively protested against the new legislation—a group that represents thousands of the 800,000-plus child laborers in Bolivia. In a bizarre twist, the very law that was meant to protect these children was being vehemently opposed by them. The reason lay in the fact that many came from poverty-stricken families and the only way to survive was for them to contribute in whatever way they could to support the family. Children from these homes worked to put food on the table, just like their parents did.

¨ç President Morales¡¯ bill was based on the idea that children should be kept out of danger.
¨è Bolivia¡¯s bill to stop child labor was met with disapproval by older workers.
¨é Many child laborers did not welcome a bill that would prevent them from working.
¨ê Many young children in Bolivia had no choice but to work because they are poor.
