Around 400 BC, two philosophical views emerged that were
worlds apart in their teachings. In Greece, a student of Socrates established
a group known as the Cyrenaics. This school of philosophy advocated that one¡¯s
sole objective in life should be to find pleasure in the moment. Since
everything about the future and others¡¯ lives is always uncertain, Cyrenaics believed
in seeking happiness for oneself and disregarding everyone else. Meanwhile, a
philosopher in China initiated a movement called Mohism. This doctrine held
that a meaningful life could only be gained by putting no one¡¯s needs above
anybody else¡¯s. Every person was equally entitled to happiness. This entailed
getting rid of anything that could cause inequality. Moreover, Mohists
emphasized that the ultimate goal was not happiness in this life but rather a
rewarding existence in the afterlife.

¨ç Mohism was created in order to counter the Cyrenaic philosophical
view.
¨è Mohists held little hope of achieving happiness in this life or the
next.
¨é Having doubt about the future was why Cyrenaics sought out present
joys.

The minute a baby giraffe is born, its mother will push it
off its feet to get it to stand, continuing to do so again and again every
time the newborn tries to lie down. When the baby stops trying and lies
still, the mother then starts nudging it back up. This is cruel and pointless
on the face of it, yet a baby giraffe must learn to walk immediately lest it
fall victim to predators. Many of the most difficult things in our lives are
the same, in that what ultimately helps us is not always ________. But if you
dig a little deeper, you will be able to see how something difficult can
benefit us.
