After graduating from
college Wendy was confronted with a problem: she needed to get a letter of
recommendation but wasn¡¯t sure whom to ask. When she first began considering
her previous professors, one teacher stood out as especially notable. During
her time at university, she remembered how inspired she was by one of her
instructors. Although she vividly remembered the professor and his class, she
wasn¡¯t sure if he would recall her. However, upon sending an email, she learned
to her great surprise that the professor remembered her very well. In fact, he felt
that the student was one of his all-time best pupils. Much in the same way that
the professor impressed the student, her passionate attitude and earnest
engagement with the subject matter created a lasting impression. At that point,
both came to appreciate the fact that sincere efforts are never in vain.

The
United States Labor Department reported that unemployment has dropped 6.7
percent over the last few months. Government officials have been quick to use
this latest statistic to reassure citizens that the tide is turning in the
economy. But does this percentage reflect the real state of the job market?
Analysts say it all depends on how you look at it.
(A) However, that number does not take into account the underemployed.
For instance, some people are stuck in part-time jobs because they can¡¯t find
full-time work. Others are working in positions that are significantly below
their skill levels because nothing else is available.
(B) These people are not considered technically jobless, and
the exclusion of this sector of workers artificially boosts the employment
rate. So, although the actual number of unemployed may have indeed gone down,
it¡¯s not really because the job market is thriving.
(C) If you calculate the unemployment rate solely by how many
eligible laborers are not working at all, then the department¡¯s figure is right
on the mark.
