Images can have a powerful impact
on those who view them. Are videos that use immersive technology just as powerful?
This type of technology obscures the line between reality and the digital
world. In a recent study, researchers exposed 194 college students to a video
game that could be played in two or three dimensions and contained nonviolent as well as violent
content. The results showed that as long as the
subjects played nonviolently, their
experiences were similar regardless of whether they played in two or three dimensions. However, those who played violently
in three dimensions were significantly angrier than those who played in two.
Asked to explain their feelings, the subjects said they felt the situation was
real and that they
had difficulty controlling their rage. There is concern that this anger could subsequently be acted out in real life, as when
Norway¡¯s mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who regularly played a
3-dimensional war game, killed 77 people.

Sally had a chat program on her
mobile phone that she used only for sending and receiving messages. Sometimes,
she would get a notice from the program about earning points. Sally wasn¡¯t
interested, so she was really surprised when she received a message saying that
she had earned 1,000 points. The message said she had to spend the 1,000 points
that very day or lose all of the points. Sally decided that she would use the
points for some very nice graphics that she could attach when sending messages
to friends. When she touched the screen of her phone to choose ¡°graphics¡±, she
made a mistake and touched ¡°games¡± instead. Her 1,000 points disappeared, and
the game she had access to was a war game that she didn¡¯t want to play.
