It is deplorable that one of the most promising African-American scientists in the world was hindered from realizing his full potential as a researcher in the United States because of the color of his skin. Ernest Everett Just graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology from Dartmouth University. Yet, top academic institutions refused to hire Just as an educator, forcing him to teach at Howard University, a school exclusively for black people. It was not until later in his career that Just finally received recognition for his revolutionary ideas and achievements regarding cells and embryonic development. Incidentally, praise for his research came from the scientific community in Europe where he was doing

research, rather than from his home country.

¨ç Just could not study at an American university because he was African American.

¨è Ernest Just decided to teach at Howard University in order to help African Americans.

¨é Americans acknowledged Just¡¯s contributions to science after Europeans praised his work.

¨ê Just made major contributions to the study of cells and the development of embryos.

Instead, they went shopping on Wednesday and bought as many marshmallows as they could afford with the money they had saved on Saturdays.

To see if monkeys could comprehend the basic principles of economics, researchers devised an experiment in which a group of monkeys was given two coins a day that they could exchange for marshmallows.  The cost of a marshmallow was one coin, but on Wednesdays, they could get two for the price of one. (A) The opposite was true on Saturdays, with the price for one marshmallow being doubled to two coins. (B) In the beginning, the monkeys paid no attention to how much the marshmallows cost, buying them whenever they could. (C) After several weeks, however, researchers noticed that the monkeys stopped making purchases on Saturdays, as they appeared to have realized the lower value of their coins. (D) By the end of the experiment, it was obvious that the monkeys had learned how to time their purchases to maximize their rewards.
