William Shakespeare has a well-deserved reputation for writing some of the greatest English-language plays of all time. His works are amazing not only because of the content but also the structure in which he wrote. Many types of writing use what¡¯s called ¡°meter,¡± which is a prescribed number of syllables and certain pattern of stressed sounds in each line of a literary work. Shakespeare¡¯s works were written in a meter called iambic pentameter, which has five groupings of one stressed and one unstressed syllable per line. Thus, if you ever read a version of Shakespeare¡¯s work that has been translated from its original English or modified in some other form, it is impossible to grasp the true scope of its ingenuity.

¨ç Shakespeare¡¯s use of iambic pentameter made his works more extraordinary.

¨è Shakespeare pioneered the use of meter in his written verses.

¨é Shakespeare wrote in a style that had an unbecoming sound.

¨ê Shakespeare¡¯s work is able to inspire readers across different cultures.

But much to my surprise, once the match started, Bill was incredible.

I learned a great lesson this week at my tennis class. ( A ) My partner didn¡¯t show up for the doubles tennis match, so my coach had to bring in a substitute to play with me. The substitute player was a very short, non-athletic guy. I was instantly angry because I thought there was no way we could win. ( B ) Before the match, my substitute partner introduced himself as Bill, and I was upset that he hardly warmed up at all. ( C ) He covered both sides of the court, had a wonderful serve, and didn¡¯t miss the ball once. ( D ) He was surprisingly quick on his feet and we won the match. In the end, I realized that I was lucky to be able to play with Bill. That experience taught me to never judge a book by its cover.
