The Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, is
a study of 15-year-old students worldwide, that is assessing tests their
abilities in math, science and reading. It is coordinated and sponsored by
the OECD in the hopes of improving educational systems globally. Students
take a two-hour test consisting of multiple-choice and essay-type questions,
and the results are then analyzed and scaled to accommodate for economic and
cultural differences. ______________________________________. This has
caused quite a bit of controversy, though, as nations that are lower on the
list have made protests. They claim that how well children do on tests cannot
be used to determine a scholastic hierarchy among nations due to so many
different variables. However, the OECD explains that the order of the list is
merely to show the effectiveness of an education program in a particular
country and is not an indicator of how smart a country¡¯s students are.

In 2009, a Norwegian author published an autobiography that
has since been touted as a literary masterpiece. The six-part series delves
intimately into his personal affairs, relationships, and hardships. The fact
that he was so candid and expressed his emotions so powerfully won him
critical acclaim and made him a possible candidate for a future Nobel Prize.
As far as the writer is concerned, though, none of that matters. His using
the real names of friends and family members effectively turned them against
him. The authentic accounts, as compelling as they made the book, only served
to hurt his loved ones by exposing truths they would rather not have shared
with the world. The aftermath of laying everything out in the open has made
him regret ever writing it at all.
