The Earth¡¯s crust is composed of tectonic plates ¨ç that float on a sea of mantle. Because of this ¨è underlying movement, plates will sometimes rub against each other, or one plate may push under or over an adjacent plate. The plates thus shift, ¨é released enormous amounts of energy and causing the upper crust ¨ê to move in a violent earthquake. The shaking can cause much damage, injury, and death.

One
of the greatest mysteries of our time is the disappearance of Amelia Earhart,
the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. During an attempt
to fly around the world in 1937, Earhart¡¯s plane went down somewhere in the
Pacific Ocean. Neither her body nor her plane were ever found, which has led to
some interesting theories. Amy and Grace Earhart, Amelia¡¯s
mother and sister, say she often longed to get out of the spotlight, and
believe she lived out her life in peace and quiet under another identity. Some
assert she was an American spy, as photos with Eleanor Roosevelt revealed she
was closely connected to the White House. Former military nurse Elsie Perch
allegedly saw Earhart¡¯s plane in 1944, claiming it was incinerated by the US military.
Unfortunately, none of these theories have yet to be proven.
