Passenger pigeons ¨ç have flown the skies of North America just one hundred years ago, and made up one-fourth of all the birds on that continent. They settled ¨è in forested habitats that were being chopped down at a rapid pace, and ¨é were considered ¨ê one of the tastiest birds.

I would like to take this opportunity
to address a common misperception about sign language, the method used by deaf
people to communicate. Most people assume that sign languages are derived from
spoken languages. You probably think that deaf people in France use a system
based on the French language, while those in China use one based on Chinese.
However, the fact of the matter is that sign languages do not have a direct
relationship to spoken languages. This creates some interesting situations. For
example, a deaf person from England cannot communicate with one from the United
States because the sign languages used in each country are unrelated. However,
deaf people from Taiwan, Korea, and Japan can communicate with each other
easily because they use sign language systems that have similar vocabulary,
grammar, and syntax.
According
to the passage, sign languages ________________.

invented in France and China

¨é developed
